KNOW HOW TO DECODE VEHICLE CHASSIS NUMBER !

Some dealers often find it difficult to clear their pending stocks and hence, sell an old car to customers badging it as a new one. Many buyers, due to lack of knowledge, fall for the words and humbleness of the sales representative and get easily get trapped and only realize things at a time when in most cases the payment has been made. But you can actually find out the manufacturing month and year of a vehicle by decoding the chassis number. In this article we will know how to decode a chassis number.

Automotive manufacturers around the world use a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) that can be decoded to reveal the Month & Year of production. Each car has a unique VIN that is usually stamped somewhere within the engine bay, or around the passenger compartment. Sometimes VIN number is also referred to as chassis number and it is stamped on chassis.

Before you buy a new or used car, make sure to verify the car details using the VIN number.

1. The length of the VIN number can be as long as 19 letters. Consider it to be the equivalent of your Aadhar number, which is unique to you and cannot be duplicated.

2. The VIN is an alphanumeric code and you cannot identify the manufacturing month and year simply by looking at it. There are different methods to decode the VIN as different manufacturers use different techniques to embed the manufacturing timeline of the vehicle in the VIN.

3. Car companies split the month and year of manufacturing into English alphabets. In the same way, the letter ‘A’ is used for the year 2010 while the ‘Y’ denotes 2030. It has to be kept in mind that letters ‘I’, ‘O’ and ‘Q’ are not used in the VIN number. The table below will help you understand in a better way
.

For manufacturing year before 2010 the manufacturers generally use 1,2,3 and so on, for example Hyundai uses 8 for 2008 model cars. Different car makers use the above letters at different places in VIN number and for this reason, there is no standard way to find out exactly which place shows the manufacturing year and month on the VIN number. Here is how some of the top automakers code the manufacturing month and year in the VIN. In simple words, you need to know which number of characters to look for, depending on the brand of your car. Here’s how to spot them for some of the most popular car brands in India.

1. Maruti Suzuki takes the 10th letter to show manufacturing year while the 11th letter denotes the month of that year.

2. Hyundai uses the 10th letter to show the manufacturing year while the 19th letter is used to code the month.

3. Mahindra codes the manufacturing year in the 10th letter while for the month, it uses the 12th letter.

4. Honda cars the 10th letter to denote the manufacturing year while 9th alphabet is used to indicate the month as per their set of codes.

5. Tata Motors use the 10th alphabet to represent the manufacturing year while the 12th letter is used to symbolize the respective month.

Now let us decode this VIN number for better understanding.

The VIN number above is MALC381ULHM299926.

KNOW WHY CHARGING CABLES ARE SHORT IN LENGTH !

I bet you face the problem of your phone charging cable being short. Have you imagined why mobile manufacturers provide short charging cables? We will explore the reason behind the reason for short cables in this article.

There is science behind the shorter charging cable as companies like Apple and Samsung spent countless hours on their design. Before we go any further we need to establish if the iPhone cable is actually short. So how long is it? The standard cable you receive in your sleek minimalist white box is one metre long.

Following are the reasons why charging cables are short:

1.)Cord length is short is to safeguard us from SAR radiation which smartphone emits while charging. It can be dangerous to talk while charging is on. If the cable is short chances are less that people will use their phone while charging.

2.) The long charging cable will offer more resistance to current. W
hen resistance increases, the current (charging current) decreases. Thus, increase in length of the wire will result in decrease in the charging current, making the charger inefficient.

3.) These cables are kept as short as possible while still being useful. Most smartphone chargers today are designed to be plugged into the USB port of your computer, with the wall adapter as an afterthought, and 6 feet is usually enough to reach the computer sitting on your desk or in your lap. It saves on material and packaging costs, while also avoiding the tangling that long cables are prone to.

4.) They are short because the manufacturer will usually make a longer cord to be purchased separately.

It is highly recommended that you use adapter and charging cable that is compatible with your phone. Changing the compatibility my harm your device and even result in explosion.

KNOW THE FUNCTION OF BUTTON ON THE DOOR HANDLE OF CAR !

You might have seen a small button on the car handle. You might have imagined why this button is for and how it works? We will explore this in this article.

These days a lot of advancement is going on in Automotive field. Every automobile company is developing some technology to make the life of user comfortable. The button that you see on the car handle is known as Request Switch or Request Sensor. This technology allows you to lock and unlock the door just by pressing the Request Switch on the door when you are carrying your key on you.

You can also open and close the trunk, and can start the engine without having to insert the key, making departure seamless. When you press this button the car sends out a signal searching for the owner, or key fob. When the key fob receives the specific signal, it replies that it is within radius and unlocks the doors for the owner.

Which means you just have to keep  the key in your pocket and press this request switch and you will be able lock and unlock your car door. There is also a same switch at the trunk side.

HOW THIS TECHNOLOGY WORKS:

Intelligent Key utilizes antennae that transmit signals between the car and the key, and a tuner that receives the signals. Pressing the Request Switch transmits a signal from the car antenna, and the key that receives the signal then automatically returns a signal. The car tuner receives this signal and then locks or unlocks the vehicle.

In order to avoid a key being locked up inside the vehicle cabin or trunk, the technology detects the status of the door lock and whether the key is remaining inside the vehicle at the moment when the door or trunk is closed. If it detects that a key has been shut inside the vehicle, it alerts you via a buzzer and simultaneously automatically unlocks the door or opens the trunk.

You can quickly determine if a car has touch-sensitive door locks installed. Take a look at the driver-side door. If no handle or lock are visible, then you can be sure that the car has a touch-sensitive lock installed.

KNOW WHY WHITE PACKETS ARE USED IN NEW PRODUCTS !

We’ve all seen those little white packets that come in the box when we buy a new pair of shoes, a bottle of vitamins, a bag or a new purse. You might be wondering what this white packet is and what is it used for? Let us discuss all these questions in this article.

These little white packets are called silica gel bags. The technical name for it is silica xerogel, but most people just call it silica gel. These bags are filled with a substance called silicon dioxide, a non-toxic inert desiccant that has the power to dry out moisture.Silica, or silicon dioxide (SiO2), is the same material found in quartz. The gel form contains millions of tiny pores that can adsorb and hold moisture. Silica gel is essentially porous sand. Silica gel can adsorb about 40 percent of its weight in moisture and can take the relative humidity in a closed container down to about 40 percent. Once saturated, you can drive the moisture off and reuse silica gel by heating it above 300 degrees F (150 C).

Silica gel packets are used to absorb moisture and keep things dry.

Many manufacturers add these desiccant packs to their new products to keep them fresh and moisture-free for the consumer. In leather products and foods like pepperoni, the lack of moisture can limit the growth of mold and reduce spoilage. In electronics it prevents condensation, which might damage the electronics. If a bottle of vitamins contained any moisture vapor and were cooled rapidly, the condensing moisture would ruin the pills. You will find little silica gel packets in anything that would be affected by excess moisture or condensation.

So, now you know why these packets are used in new products. You also knew how these bags work. Thank you for reading the article.

KNOW WHY BOWLERS RUB BALL IN CRICKET MATCH !!

While watching cricket match you might have seen bowlers rub the ball often against their trousers. Have you even wondered why bowlers do so? We will discuss the reason behind the rubbing of ball in this article.

Actually, whenever you rub the ball, no umpire or match referee tells you anything. At the same time, if you violate the ICC rules while rubbing it, then you also have to pay its loss. Let us first tell you why the bowler does this. Whenever the ball is new, it falls straight, very little swing (out swing, in swing or reverse swing) is found. In such a situation, only the batsman gets the benefit which no bowler wants.

Bowlers try to make the ball shine and smooth mainly for making it to slip on the bat and make it possible to render the batsman out by catches at slips and by the wicket keeper. The smooth ball is also likely to misbehave while it is hit for a bigger shot and are caught anywhere in the field an on boundaries.

Now,let us understand the science behind this.

When bowler is rubbing one side of ball he is actually polishing or smoothening the surface of the ball. Other half of the ball remains as it is or more rough. When bowler throws the ball at high velocity, low pressure is created near smooth surface and high pressure area is created on rougher side. This pressure differential SWINGS ball in air.

To look at this aerodynamically, one must understand the concept of boundary layer formation and separation. Boundary Layer is a layer of fluid (in this case, Air) which tends to stick to the surface of the object (The ball) when the object tries to move through the fluid. The boundary layer does not cause any effect on the object’s flow through the fluid (except for resistance) until it separates. Boundary layer separation occurs when the flow velocity increases to such an extent that the pressure difference increases drastically in the flow direction. Boundary Layer separation causes formation of eddies which then resist the movement of the flowing object. The Boundary Layer formed on any surface can be either Laminar or Turbulent.

In Laminar Flow, the flow of the fluid is in organised parallel lines. Whereas, the Turbulent Boundary Layer the fluid particles move in disorganized and intersecting paths. Therefore, ball is made rough so that turbulent boundary layer is formed which results in disorganized movement of ball.

In conclusion, we have seen that science behind rubbing the ball.Thank you reading the article.

KNOW WHY VENTILATIONS ARE PLACED AT TOP OF THE ROOF !

We see doors and windows in our room in daily life. They are placed in such a way that we can pass through them easily. But, when we see ventilation, they are always placed at the top of the room. Have you ever imagined why are they placed on the top, why not near the window? We will discuss why ventilations are placed on top of the roof in this article.

Ventilations are basically window like structure that is used to pull out hot air in a room. Ventilation moves outdoor air into a building or a room and distributes the air within the building or room. The general purpose of ventilation in buildings is to provide healthy air for breathing by both diluting the pollutants originating in the building and removing the pollutants from it.

Ventilators are kept at the top of the roof to pass the hot air inside a room to pass outwards. As hot air is lighter than cold air relatively, it goes up near the ceiling & passes through ventilators as a result cold air finds its way to come in to fill the room. Hence, this ensures a circulation of air inside a room. Also, ventilation at the top ensures an ample amount of sunlight to enter into the room.

During night time, ventilators allow the cold air to flow inside the room. It also secures the oxygen level in a crowded room by circulating air.

Home ventilation is important to keep the house and its occupants healthy and comfortable. Ventilation is a key component to maintaining proper indoor air quality. Ventilation keeps air flowing through the home, eliminating contaminants, moisture buildup, and odors.

KNOW WHY TRAIN ENGINES ARE NOT TURNED OFF AT PLATFORMS !

You might have noticed that diesel trains are never turned off. They are always left running when they are on platforms for 30 or 40 minutes. Have you ever wondered why would the railway department waste so much fuel if the train isn't moving! It seems a bit strange, right? We will discuss the reason behind this in this article.

1.) Every diesel engine has a battery and this battery is charged only when the engine is running, if this battery is not charged then the loco motive system of the train can fail. It takes about 20 minutes for the engine to restart when the red light comes on the way or if the diesel engine of the train is stopped for any reason. Apart from all this, a lot of diesel is required to start a diesel engine.

2.)If the engine is turned off for long periods of time, it takes another long span of time to repressurise (as compressors take power from the engine) the brake lines. Trains, being large and heavy, need the optimal brake line pressure for its efficient stopping. For obvious reasons, loco pilots never compromise on brake line pressure.

3.)If the engine hasn't been started since long (or, if the engine is cold), it takes quite an effort to restart it. Depending on the size and construction of the engine, it can take 10 to 20 minutes just to start it.

4.) In some countries a diesel locomotive also provide hotel load to the coaches powering the air-conditioners, lights and pantry.

5.)Diesel engines don't really use that much fuel when idling, especially compared to the potential problems caused by shutting them down, so the engines are left running unless the train is being berthed for the night.

Today's trains have ‘Auxillary Power Unit (APU)' in order to reduce the fuel consumption while idling. This is a separate system for powering all the electronics, and is also found in aeroplanes. APU can also help in reducing the emissions in diesel locomotives.

It is clear from above points that engine is not shut down to save diesel consumption. Now you know why the diesel engine of the train is not stopped. Let us tell you that in coming time we may not get to see the diesel engines of the train, because diesel engines are being tried to replaced with electricity and this will benefit both the railways and the environment.
